Asking Why before I buy

If a friend asks me to do something for them, “Meet me next Wednesday I need to talk about a few things” the first question before I go is “why?” We need to know the why question before we commit valuable time. Fair enough!

Before we go to the movies we check out a few reviews to make sure the next 2 hours has a chance of being a meaningful experience not a 1 star experience.

Buying something over $50 usually means googling online to check prices before ordering it or going to a shop to get it.

In most of life we want to know why before we buy! But not so with life itself it seems? For some reason we believe we can get a refund on most things.

Doesn’t it follow that if we can waste our time on the little decisions of life we can do the same with large slabs of it. Isn’t life just the accumulation of all those little decisions adding up to who I am and what I am living for?

We have to ask the question: “what’s my big why?”

Your big why will be the ordering principle of your world. If I don’t have one or don’t think about it because its too scary or complicated I will be ordered around by every change in the weather! What’s the money situation? How am I feeling? What are people saying? What does the boss want? And the last question I ask is “Is this what I should do”?

Are there any big principles we can use to order our world? We could mention a few; justice, love, beauty, excellence, fame, honour or truth but what about this one: the fear of the Lord!

Psalm 33:8 says “Let all the earth fear the Lord, let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.” Now we are entitled to ask ”why” about this one.

The Psalmist says ”For He spoke and it was done …He commanded and it stood fast. The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing …He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.”

The simple answer to “why” is this; if I don’t want my life to equal zero I’ve got to ask, “What does God say about that?” If God is actively nullifying the best laid plans of mice and men then without HIS why my life is going to be a dud . I’m buying tickets to a 1 star movie!

Ask Why before you buy, “What has God spoken?” Begin to do that and life will be a 5 star movie not a 1 star.
